British Council IELTS 25th Anniversary Scholarship 2014

The British Council IELTS Scholarships are awarded to high-calibre individuals with motivation to develop their career and who demonstrate the potential to contribute to society what they have gained from their study experience. IELTS scholars are committed to networking within the IELTS community and sharing their experience with other IELTS candidates. The scholarship enables students to study any chosen course in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme of a higher institution that accepts IELTS as part of its admission requirements.
Up to two students in Burma will each receive GBP 2,500.
The top three scholars in the East Asia region will each receive GBP 25,000.
The scholarship will go towards tuition fee of the scholars' chosen courses, to be paid directly to the institutions.
*East Asia region includes China, Hong Kong & Macau, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Burma, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam

TO QUALIFY FOR AN IELTS SCHOLARSHIP, YOU MUST:

  • currently live in Burma
  • begin undergraduate or postgraduate study outside Burma in 2014 (academic year)
  • attend a higher educational institution that accepts IELTS as part of its admission requirements
  • have taken your most recent IELTS test at the British Council, with a minimum band score of 6 in each of the four component parts of the test
  • be able to provide an acceptance letter from the attending institution by 27 June 2014. 

HOW TO APPLY?

  1. Take an IELTS test at a British Council authorised centre and receive your scores 
  2. Download and complete the application form
  3. An original hard copy of your application should be sent to:  IELTS Scholarship

  4. Your completed application must be received before 6 June 2014.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Applications are initially reviewed against the British Council IELTS scholarship eligibility criteria and assessed by British Council officers 
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a face-to-face video-taped interview, where you will be assessed by a panel of senior managers and external raters from the higher education and/or corporate sectors in Hong Kong.

What you need to know about the Common European Framework of Reference- CEFR


Hello everyone,
Nowadays, and each day more frequently, you can hear “My level of English is a B2”.
We can still remember when instead of saying a “B2” we would say “Upper Intermediate”, but being an “Upper Intermediate” could mean many different things with respect your competence and abilities to communicate in English as a non-native speaker.
What The Common European Framework of Reference, CEFR, has done is to establish six levels of competence and abilities that provide a basis for mutual recognition of language qualifications.
This is very important because it facilitates educational and occupational mobility. In other words, the CEFR makes easier for people to study or work in another country and language. The CEFR plays a very important role in language and education policy, not only within Europe, but worldwide and it has growing relevance for language testers and examination boards.
The six levels divided as follows:
Levels A – Basic users (A1 and A2) – Beginners and Lower Intermediate students
Levels B – Intermediate users (B1 and B2) – Intermediate and Upper Intermediate students
Levels C – Proficient users (C1 and C2) – Advanced students

ADB-Japan Scholarship Program

Terms Of Awards

Scholarships are for a period of one to two years and are awarded at designated institutions (DIs) in the Asia and Pacific region. Studies in economics, business and management, science and technology and other development-related fields are eligible. The maximum duration of scholarship award is two years for the MA, MS, & MBA Program. In cases where a PhD program is approved, the duration is also two years.
Remarks: Government of Japan has made clear that it would support only up to 2 years, consistent with similar assistance that it is coursing through other international development institutions.
Renewal of Scholarships
  • The initial scholarship period is one year. An appropriate extension for the second year of study shall be conditional on the scholar's maintaining a satisfactory level of performance as determined by the DI.
  • Extension of scholarships will not be allowed, in principle, beyond the two-year period.
  • Scholarships maybe suspended for a maximum of twelve months or two semesters, if deemede necessary for valid reasons such as health or family reasons.
  • The total number of scholarship awards is reviewed and set yearly by ADB. Within the total number of scholars, ADB will approve new scholars based upon the recommendation of DIs when incumbent scholars complete studies or withdraw their scholarships.
Deferment of Awards
  • Deferment of awards may be granted for up to a maximum of six months or one semester, at the discretion of the DI. The DI should submit the request for deferral to the ADB. Deferrals maybe approve for valid reasons, including pregnancy, unresolved family issues, or failure to obtain a visa. If a student cannot take upt the offer within one year after the year for which it is awarded, he/she has to reapply for the scholarship.
Replacement of Dropouts
  • Replacement of scholars who have dropped from the Program is not allowed during the academic year.
Transfer of Scholarships
  • A transfer from one course of study to another, or to another institution, is not allowed.
Special Conditions
  • In accepting the ADB-JSP scholarship, scholars should commit themselves to return to, and work in their home countries for a period of at least 2 years after completion of their studies.
  • In accepting the ADB-JSP scholarship, scholars consent to the employment restriction policy of the ADB-JSP and acknowledge that they will not be able to work at ADB for two years after completion of their academic programs.
Termination of Scholarships
  • Scholarships may be terminated upon the recommendation of the DI, at anytime, for failure to make satisfactory academic progress, failure to comply with the laws of the host country (location of DI), misconduct, or breaches of the conditions of the ADB-JSP or the student visa.

Selection

Eligibility Requirements:
  • A national of an ADB borrowing member country (applicants from countries that are no longer borrowing from ADB are not eligible for the ADB-JSP Scholarship).
  • Gained admission to an approved MA/PhD course at a DI.
  • A bachelor's degree or its equivalent with superior academic record.
  • At least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience (acquired after a university degree) at a time of application.
  • Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies.
  • Not more than 35 years old at the time of application. In exceptional cases, for programs which are appropriate for senior officials and managers, the age limit is 45 years old.
  • In good health.
  • Should agree to return to his/her home county after completion of studies under the Program.
  • Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and relatives of the aforementioned are not eligible for the Scholarship.
  • Staff of DIs are not eligible for the Scholarship.
  • Applicants living or working in a country other than his/her home country are not eligible for the scholarships.
  • ADB-JSP does not support applicants who are already enrolled in graduate degree programs.
  • ADB-JSP does not sponsor undergraduate studies, distance learning programs, short-term training, conferences, seminars, thesis writing, and research projects.
Selection Criteria:
  • Priority to the ranking, or order of merit, proposed by the DIs.
  • Applicants with less than two years of work experience will not be selected.
  • Preference to women candidates.
  • Preference to applicants with lesser financial capacity. Family income should be not more than USD50, 000 per year and individual income should not be more than USD25,000 per year.
  • The Program will, in principle, not support applicants who have previously studied abroad.
  • The Program will, in principle, not support applicants who are pursuing a second MA or a second PhD degree.
  • Candidates who are applying at a DI in their own country may not be selected.
  • Diversification of nationality in the overall Program as well as at each DI level will be considered.
  • The Program encourages studies in line with core areas of ADB's Strategy 2020, which address poverty reduction through infrastructure, environment, regional cooperation and integration, finance sector development, and education. Procedures for Applying:
  • Applicants should request information and application forms from the chosen DI. Applicants are encouraged to access various resources, including the DI's website & handbooks, and DI information sessions held in-country, to assist them in making an informed decision on the DI and course they wish to undertake.
  • Applicants should indicate to the DI that they are applying for admission and that they would like to be considered for the ADB-JSP Scholarship. The completed DI application form and required documentation, including the ADB-JSP Information Sheet form, should be submitted to the DI. Applicants must ensure that they submit accurate and complete documentation. Failure to do so may result in an application not being processed or to an award being terminated if documentation or information provided is later determined to be false. Applicants are required to submit their latest Income Tax Return or Certification of their Annual Salary/Monthly Salary, whichever is available. They should also submit a Certification of Family Income (Parent's Income/Spouse if married).
  • The DI will screen and rank the applicants, based on its own selection criteria, keeping in view the eligibility requirements and selection criteria of the ADB. In the evaluation process, the DI may contact the candidates for further information. The DI will then submit its ranked list of applicants to ADB, including a description of the score/grading system which is the basis for the ranking.
  • ADB will review the submission from the DIs and recommend awardees based on the selection criteria of ADB to the Executive Director of Japan for formal approval.
  • Upon approval by the Executive Director of Japan, ADB will advise DIs on the successful candidates.
  • The DI will inform all applicants of the outcome of the selection process and begin to make arrangements for the awardees take up their scholarships.
  • The DIs will arrange for the signing of the Acceptance of Scholarship Award by awardee wherein the scholars agree that after completion of their study, they will return to their home country.
  • ADB will send an appropriate congratulatory letter to each scholar.

THE SCHOLARSHIP

Coverage
  • Tuition fees (actual costs)
  • Housing (based on actual cost of dormitory housing or a reasonable allowance for appropriate off campus housing—to be agreed upon between each DI and ADB).
  • Subsistence Allowance (a flat allowance to be agreed upon between each DI and ADB).
  • Student Medical and accident insurance (actual costs).
  • Books (a flat allowance to be agreed upon between each DI and ADB).
  • Economy class air travel at most direct route to and from the DI and the awardee’s home country (actual costs).
  • Miscellaneous expenses related to travel such as visa fees, airport taxes, luggage allowance, etc. (a flat allowance).
  • Excess luggage up to 20 kgs may be financed during return travel to the home country (actual costs).
  • Thesis/Research Allowance is intended to cover the scholar's research expenditures and can be used for such expenditure items as photocopying, school supplies, typing and computer charges, postage, communications, binding charges, local travel costs and accommodation for out-of-town trips. (a flat allowance)
  • Scholars are expected to have sufficient skills in language and computer to undertake their study program. However, in special cases where additional training is deemed necessary, expenditures incurred to improve language proficiency and computer literacy may be covered under the scholarship (actual costs).
  • The ADB-JSP does not cover: expenses for the scholar family; extra-curricular courses or training; additional travel during the course of study program; additional expenses related to supplementary educational materials, field trips, or participation in workshops, seminars, or internships while at the DI or purchase of educational equipment such as computers.
Policies and Procedures
  • The ADB-JSP Scholarship is for the scholar only and does not cover expenses for the scholar's dependents.
  • DIs are encouraged to provide tuition fee discounts to outstanding scholars, as agreed with ADB.
  • Preparatory/bridging courses, such as English proficiency or computer literacy courses, can be funded by ADB-JSP. These courses should be undertaken within the DI.
  • Expenses relating to activities not directly related to the pursuit of the degree, such as attendance in a conference and other similar activities, are not financed under the ADB-JSP.
  • Subsistence allowances are normally given to the scholars at the beginning of each month. However, DIs may disburse allowances according to their practice.
  • For expenses related to air travels, DIs should provide ADB with a copy of the scholars’ air tickets from their home countries to DIs. Return travel is paid upon successful completion of studies.
  • An establishment allowance may be provided to new scholars to help with initial costs of setting up their temporary home at the DI. This is paid only once at the start of the scholarship (a flat allowance).
  • The ADB-JSP scholarship only supplements, and does not duplicate, any other source of financial support/fellowship the scholar might have. Scholars must inform the ADB-JSP if they have other sources of scholarships funds. The ADB-JSP stipend may be withdrawn completely or partially if during the scholarship period the program has evidence of additional sources of support.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

The conference organizers are committed to making AIDS 2014 accessible to people from resource-limited settings and communities, researchers, young people, community activists and civil society representatives.

For AIDS 2012 in Washington, D.C. more than 10,000 applications were received and just over 850 scholarships were offered. For AIDS 2014 the same share of the total conference budget has been allocated scholarships.



International Scholarship Programme

The International Scholarship Programme is open to everyone around the world working or volunteering in the field of HIV and AIDS.

Priority will be given to those whose participation will help enhance their work in their own communities, to those who are able to assist in the transfer of skills and knowledge acquired at the conference, and to those whose abstract, workshop or programme activity submission has been selected. Scholarship selection will be based on a non-biased scoring system established in advanced. A Scholarship Review Committee will contribute to the reviewing and scoring of the applications.

Although every attempt will be made to assist as many people as possible, we regret that there are only a limited number of international scholarships available. On average, less than 10% of applicants are awarded a scholarship. Applicants are therefore strongly encouraged to seek other funding as well.

Those interested in applying for an International Scholarship must complete the online International Scholarship application form through their conference profile between 5 December 2013 and 13 February 2014, 24:00 CET. Those submitting an abstract, workshop and/or programme activity proposal and interested in applying for an International Scholarship should start their scholarship request through their conference profile. Applicants will then receive instructions on how to link their abstract, workshop and/or programme activity to their scholarship application.

International Scholarship applicants will be asked to submit a letter of recommendation after completing the scholarship application form. No international application will be accepted without submission of the letter of recommendation.


Media Scholarship Programme

A very limited number of scholarships will also be available for media representatives from around the world. Media scholarship applicants will be asked to provide media accreditation and supporting documents. No media application will be accepted without submission of the required supporting documentation.

Those interested in applying for a Media Scholarship must complete the online Media Scholarship application form through their conference profile between 5 December 2013 and 13 February 2014, 24:00 CET. Click here to see questions included in the Media Scholarship application form.

Selected Media Scholarship recipients will be asked to perform the following tasks:
  • Production of an article/tv/radio broadcast programme focused on AIDS 2014 before July 2014. The article/programme must be published within the recipient’s country or region and a link to it needs to be sent to media@aids2014.org . Please note that that recipients will be provided with an information pack to help them with their article development.
  • Production of at least 2 articles/TV/radio broadcast programmes during the conference. Links to them need to be sent to media@aids2014.org by 15 August 2014.
  • Compulsory attendance to the pre-conference media training which will be held at the conference venue (media centre) on Sunday 20 July in the morning.
  • During the conference, compulsory daily attendance to a briefing on daily events with AIDS 2014 communications representatives.

Application Criteria

International scholarship applications are open to anyone working or volunteering in the field of HIV who are at least 16 years of age at the time of the conference (20 July 2014). Click here to look through the International Scholarship terms and conditions.

Media scholarship applications are open to all bona fide journalists who are at least 16 years of age at the time of the conference (20 July 2014). Click here to look through the Media Scholarship terms and conditions.

Most of the questions asked on the application form are related to personal details and work experience. There are also questions which ask for further details regarding the applicant's organization, occupation or involvement in the field of HIV, motivation to attend the conference and how the applicant's organization or community would benefit from the scholarship.


Types of Support

Scholarship applicants will be able to request a full or partial scholarship.
A full scholarship includes:
  • Registration fee for the conference (include access to all sessions and exhibitions);
  • Travel (pre-paid airfare at the lowest fare available, from the nearest international airport);
  • Accommodation (shared in a budget hotel or dorm for the days of the conference);
  • Modest daily living allowance for the duration of the conference (20-25 July 2014, USD 55 per day).
A partial scholarship includes any combination of the above.

Please note that funding is limited and demand for scholarships is high. Scholarship applicants are therefore encouraged to seek other funding as well.
